Gary Baker Memorial Day

Who is Gary Baker?

If you didn't know Gary Baker, he was a longtime ACE member who was a strong advocate for the amusement industry and roller coaster preservation. He was heavily involved in the fundraising that lead to the restoration of Leap the Dips, the world's oldest roller coaster, which is located at Lakemont Park. He also served ACE in numerous capacities, including as regional representative for ACE Western Pennsylvania and as ACE's national events director, a position that he held for six years. Gary passed away unexpectedly in fall of 2009. This reoccurring event was created to honor Gary, who truly loved all parks, but especially the traditional ones. Lakemont Park and DelGrosso's Park were undoubtedly two of his favorites.

An Informal Event With a Twist

This is an informal event and no registration is required. A discount is available to to ACE members and their guests at one of our host parks (see separate section). While this event doesn't include ERT, there is an optional schedule of ITOTs (Informal TakeOver Times) and meet-up activities should you wish to meet up with your fellow ACE members. In addition, there is an optional (and very affordable) catered meal at DelGrosso's, which will take place at 4 p.m. See next section.

Enjoy a Meal at DelGrosso's

As a bit of a twist, the otherwise informal event will offer an optional meal at DelGrosso's -- a park well known of its high quality food. The meal will take place at 4 p.m and the cost (for both members and non-members alike) is only $12. The scrumptious picnic will include a barbecued half chicken, spaghetti with DelGrosso's marinara sauce, salad, roll & butter, soft drinks and an ice cream cup. Advance registration/payment for the meal is required to participate and those interested can sign up to attend it when they register for KennyKon XXX (event held the day prior) either online or by mail. Note that you do not need to attend KennyKon to attend Gary Baker Memorial Day or sign up for the catered meal. To sign up for the catered meal, click the Register Now button below.

Saturday, July 20,2019

In case you haven't heard, Kennywood is adding a new coaster for 2019. And not only is The Steel Curtain new, but it's darn big, and is one of enthusiasts' most anticipated new coasters this year. It was also very nice of Kennywood to launch their largest new coaster project ever to debut, in the celebratory 30th year of KennyKon! At 220 feet, The Steel Curtain is higher than any coaster in the state. With nine inversions, that's more than any in North America. And with more than 4,000 feet of track, that's longer than any other coaster at Kennywood! And like nearly all of the park's coasters, it's a custom design. It's our hope and expectation that The Steel Curtain will be reliably operating at the time of the event, and therefore we're planning to include it on our morning ERT. However, like all new installations, especially ones with new designs, technical challenges can prevail. If the new ride isn't operating, alternate ERT arrangements will be made and we'll still plan to celebrate our 30th KennyKon in style!
